Example of AI Visibility
The WD-40 Company was a long-time client of mine — and might be again after seeing this.
While trying to fix my snowblower (the shop had installed the auger backwards), I turned to ChatGPT instead of Google or YouTube. I even included a photo. It recognized the machine was a Cub Cadet and gave me step-by-step instructions — including a tools list.
But here’s the part that matters:
Of all the brands it could have listed for penetrating oil, it mentioned PB Blaster and Liquid Wrench — but not WD-40, the biggest, most iconic name in the space.
That’s what AI visibility looks like — or doesn’t.
If your brand isn’t mentioned in the answer, you’re not even under consideration.
Why WD-40 Wasn't Mentioned
WD-40 may not be cited for a few reasons:
- Lack of structured content: If the official site or trusted third parties haven’t published clear, instructional usage guidance in a format that LLMs can parse, it won’t be cited.
- LLM training data: Models favor content from forums, repair blogs, and detailed how-to lists — where brands like PB Blaster may be more frequently recommended by DIY users.
- Contextual relevance: WD-40 is often seen as a general-use lubricant, while PB Blaster is marketed specifically for rust and seized parts. The model may have learned that distinction.
